the case of Mandarin verb ZOU (走) Yaling Hsu Meichun Liu National Chiao Tung University [email protected] [email protected] Abstract In this paper, we propose a procedural schema as a model of cognitive processing of word senses, which can be viewed as a derivational resolution of polysemy. Previous researches, such as Frame -Based Lexicon by Fillmore [4] and Lexical Semantics by Cruse [2], are all concerned with word senses, but what is still missing is a holistic resolution of polysemy. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the cognitive process from word form to word senses, based on corpus-based procedural resolution. In this way, we hope to provide an overall discussion and a computerizable way of solving multiplicity of semantic usages of a single word form. A case study of the Mandarin verb ZOU (走) is presented and used as an illustration.

A Case Study on the Grammaticalization of GUO in Mandarin Chinese-Polysemy of the Motion Verb with Respect to Semantic Changes

This paper investigates the grammaticalization paths of the motion verb GUO in Mandarin Chinese based on synchronic corpus data. The Mandarin morpheme GUO is shown to have undergone numerous semantic shifts: the spatial GUO through the operation of The Moving Ego Metaphor and The Moving Time Metaphor is initially mapped onto the target domain of temporality. With metaphoric or metonymic extensi...

L1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners

This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...

A Step-wise Usage-based Method for Inducing Polysemy-aware Verb Classes

We present an unsupervised method for inducing verb classes from verb uses in gigaword corpora. Our method consists of two clustering steps: verb-specific semantic frames are first induced by clustering verb uses in a corpus and then verb classes are induced by clustering these frames. By taking this step-wise approach, we can not only generate verb classes based on a massive amount of verb use...

Verb polysemy and frequency effects in thematic fit modeling

While several data sets for evaluating thematic fit of verb-role-filler triples exist, they do not control for verb polysemy. Thus, it is unclear how verb polysemy affects human ratings of thematic fit and how best to model that. We present a new dataset of human ratings on high vs. low-polysemy verbs matched for verb frequency, together with high vs. low-frequency and well-fitting vs. poorly-f...

A Frame-based Approach to Polysemous Near-synonymy: the Case with Mandarin Verbs of Expression

In this paper, we propose a frame-based approach to polysemy by analyzing three near-synonymous verbs biaoshi (表示), biaoda (表達) and biaolu (表露). Based on Liu and Wu (2004), this paper further discusses the cross-frame phenomena of near-synonyms with a detailed comparison of their syntactic and collocational patterns. It is shown that polysemy among related verbs may be well defined and manifest...
